TFN Fan Days 2011 Banner by JoeHoganArt TFN Fan Days 2011 Banner by JoeHoganArt
When a site like TFN asks you to do their Fan Days 2011 banner, the answer should be "YES!!!", otherwise, you're insane. So, my answer was YES!!!! After doing their Celebration V banner last year (and already agreeing to doing their Celebration VI banner next last year), I jumped at the chance to do a Fan Days banner for them as well. There isn't more a would-be Star Wars artist could ask for than featured by TFN itself! So a huge thanks for bringing me back after CV to do another banner!!!

If you're attending Fan Days in Texas this year, be sure to stop by the booth and check out the banner in all its glory! =)

Does anyone else agree that the clones are the only reason why the cartoon series is the best?

They're a big part of it, sure! I happen to really love James Arnold Taylor's and Matt Lanter's portrayals of Obi-Wan and Anakin, personally!

I don't think Lucas arts get's the message that the clones are the highlight of the series.

This looks super cool! Awesome coloring! Just curious, do you do the lineart by hand or do you use a photoshop line tool or something?

Thank you very much! Actually, any time I do digital work, I do all of my inking in Photoshop using the brush tool, but I have a Cintiq monitor which allows me to get pressure sensitivity from the brush, so it's not just one size when I do my strokes! Judging from your gallery (which is fantastic!), I'd imagine you're familiar with tablets, though! Looks like that's how you do some of your work, right? So, short answer, brush tool + Cintiq! haha

LOL, my gallery fantastic? I dunno if I'd call it that. You're definitely much better than me. But thank you, regardless!

I asked because your lineart looks so smooth and neat. It definitely doesn't look freehand!

And yes, I do mine freehand with a wacom tablet.

Ah come on, you're a little hard on yourself! You've got some strong work and great style! And your sense of color is GREAT! =)

Thanks for the kind words on my lineart, I personally think it needs a lot of work (up close it's really sloppy and rushed, usually), but I guess that's just the life of an artist, we're our own worst critics! But yeah, the lines are smooth because basically, for all the most important lines, I keep my left hand on the pen, doing the strokes as confidently as I can, and my left hand on "ctrl + z", undoing until I get the exact line I'm happy with! It's quicker than it sounds, but I always like the end product most when I do it that way. =) Just be confident with your lines, you can always erase the excess (or just make a new layer for any lines giving you trouble, and then merge them together later!). Hope any of that helps!

Aw, you're so nice. I'm definitely my own worst critic. I'm never really satisfied with anything I do.

I pretty much have the same lineart process you do, one hand on ctl+z and the other hand holding the pen, doing it over and over until it's right.

It's funny to me that you say my sense of color is great, because that's the one thing I struggle with most of all. I have a really hard time trying to bring color into shadows, figuring out bizarre lighting situations, and adding color where it wouldn't exist in real life. Got any tips? :D

I hear you! I feel the same way about my own work.

Okay nice! So you've already developed a good workflow, since I honestly think the stroke/undo combo is the fastest and most efficient way to get the job done right. As for coloring situations, you're kind of blowing me away asking me for tips, because frankly I think you're further along than I am! The only advice I can give you is keep looking for those "happy accidents", and play around with blend modes. Anytime I have trouble figuring out what a color should look like, I throw it on a separate layer and screw around with blend modes until I find something I really like. Other than that, it could just be a simple method of trying to find similarly lit pieces of art and seeing how that artist handled it! It isn't cheating to look at how other people do it! =) Then you go from there and make it your own (hopefully instead of carbon copying).

Anyway, I've added you to my watch list, because I'm expecting more great stuff from you. So keep up the fantastic work!

Thanx! Sometimes I forget to look at other people's work for lighting ideas.

Aw, thanx for the watch! Now I'm feeling some pressure...:D
